Shabby chic at Vintage Emporium

Shabby Chic at Vintage Emporium
The Shabby Chic style started in Great Britain and evokes the type of decoration found in large country houses where there are worn and faded old chintz sofas and curtains, old paintwork and wonderful patinas.
This styling represents a now generic form of interior design where furnishings are selected for their aged and worn appearance. Ideally soft and feminine with a romantic and nostalgic vintage appeal.
Shabby Chic ~One thing it certainly does not mean is chipped or cracked or so worn that there is no pattern left.
Vintage Emporium specializes in working with beautiful Shabby chic furniture and furnishings to reproduce vignettes for your event. All of our items, which are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique are well loved. At the same time, they have a soft, opulent, yet cottage-style decor.
Shabby chic items are often heavily painted through the years, with many layers showing through obviously time-worn areas. Furniture pieces that are not genuine antiques are usually selected for their resemblance to older furniture styles, and may be reproduction furniture with a distressed finish. Fabrics tend to be cottons and linens, with linen being particularly popular, inspired by old French linens. Pure whites, as well as ecrus and worn or bleached out pastel colours are favorites. New fabric is often stained with tea to give it the look of old fabric. Bleached and faded are terms often applied to the style. Vintage floral patterns with pastel colours, cotton ticking patterns, or linen in earth tones, are all typical of shabby chic style. Some of our vignettes have hints from French, Rococo, Shabby Chic and Garden styles of interior design.
The end result of shabby chic is to achieve an elegant/nostalgic overall effect.

Our china wear.
The vintage plates used to make our cake stands are often older than great grandma. They are functional wares that were designed to be used and appreciated. We never use brand new china. Reclaimed vintage pieces have nearly all been used and do sometimes show signs of crazing and feint scratches or utensil marks on the surface. Usually the gold gilding on the edge is worn in patches from decades of handling and cleaning. This age related wear is entirely authentic and adds character and charm to the piece. Well used is well loved. Our cake stands and tea sets are never new items that have been rubbed, scrubbed or painted and distressed to look old. They are always the real thing! That’s the true meaning of shabby chic!
Someone has to bring back to use this fabulous chinaware otherwise they will be left forgotten at the back of a cupboard somewhere or even worse, smashed and tossed away as an odd piece and lost forever.
At Vintage Emporium we use the words shabby chic to refer to porcelain china of excellent quality with what we think is a beautiful pattern or shape that has previously been used and is no longer in production.
